Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility, San Diego
San Clemente Island is located about 70 miles west of San Diego and just south of Santa Catalina Island. San Clemente Island is about 20 miles long and five miles wide. The airfield is located at the northern most tip of the island. To reach San Clemente Island, all personnel fly on a contracted Fairchild Metro plane from Naval Base Coronado (formerly NASNI) to the SCI air terminal. It is about a 25 minute flight. Within five miles of the airfield is Wilson Cove which is the location of the barracks, ships store, galley, administrative offices, and all hands club. FACSFAC DET SCI is located 12.5 miles south of Wilson Cove at nearly 2000 feet above sea level. This area is called Mt. Thirst, the radar and transmitter site. One mile south across a gorge is our receiver site, Mt. Vista. The detachment consists of 10 Electronic Technicians, the LCPO, and the Officer in Charge. The ET's conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on the various pieces of equipment at both sites as well as building and grounds maintenance.
Since 1934, the island has been owned and operated by various naval commands. More than a dozen range and operational areas are clustered within a 60 mile radius of the island. On the island there are two gyms, a basketball/volleyball court, racquetball court, softball field, driving range, paint ball field, an all hands club (The Salty Crab) and a two lane bowling alley. There are also kayaks, fishing, biking, hiking and more. We have a small ships store with some necessities and snacks. Dining is limited to the galley and after hours, some food is available at the Salty Crab. Sailors are assigned a permanent barracks that has a small kitchen shared with one roommate.
SCI has a great MWR program that does an excellent job of keeping a diverse group of events and tournaments going throughout the year. Events include OIC Cup, poker tournaments, pool tournaments, volleyball, basketball, darts, softball, dodge ball, horseshoes, and more. Additionally, the island MWR program puts on a great Christmas Party and polar bear swim / chili cook-off.
Some of the benefits of being stationed aboard SCI include Family Separation Allowance (if married or single parent), BAS, and BAH for E-4's with over four years of service and Area Incentive Pay*. (*In order to receive Area Incentive Pay, it MUST be on your PCS orders to the island, it cannot be added after you check in.)
Our sites at Mt. Thirst and Mt. Vista house over 400 pieces of communication equipment, radar, microwave transceivers, and tactical data links. We also maintain equipment for the Air Force, Coast Guard, SCORE, San Diego county Sheriff's Department, college research labs and the FAA. Mt. Thirst is manned 24/7/365 by the ET's of the detachment. They work and stand watch on a port and starboard rotation. On the current rotation, Sailor's attached to SCI Det spend about 50-55% of their time on SCI and the rest back in San Diego. When on island, they either stand an overnight watch at Mt. Thirst or they are at Wilson Cove in their permanently assigned barracks room.
